  11.        release notes, please refer to those release notes for

  16.        Other problems that we have found specific to the SGI
  17.        release that may also exist in other releases are as
  18.        follows:

  20.           +o When netscape is started automatically by the desktop
  21.             via session management, the fonts in java applets may
  22.             become unreadable.  Quitting and restarting netscape
  23.             will fix the problem. Or you can define the environment
  24.             variable MOZILLA_HOME to be /var/netscape/communicator
  25.             in your login initialization.

  27.           +o The SGI customized mailcap and mime.types files are not
  28.             read by this release of the browser so certain IRIX
  29.             specific programs won't automatically launch when the
  30.             web server sends that file.  To workaround this problem
  31.             do the following:

  38.           +o While Netscape documents how to eliminate the use of a
  39.             disk cache by setting the cache size to zero, Java,
  40.             JavaScript, and Plugins all need local cache files in
  41.             order to function properly.  A zero size cache will
  42.             cause the browser to crash periodically when running.
  43.             The workaround is simply to not specify a zero size
  44.             disk and/or memory cache, a one meg cache is enough to
  45.             work around this problem.

  47.           +o When launching multiple instances of netscape from the
  48.             same user account on a single machine you will get a
  49.             dialog box telling you that a lock file exists.  If you
  50.             ignore this dialog box then you won't be able to save
  51.             anything to the disk cache and plugins will not
  52.             function properly.  The proper thing to do is to create
  53.             a new browser window by using the "File->New->Navigator
  54.             Window" menu item.

  56.           +o Many of the shortcuts do not work like CTRL-F (for Find
  57.             in Page) though they do work off the menu bar.

  74.           +o Due to some problems in the cache, some HTML pages may
  75.             not display properly.  To fix the display try hitting
  76.             the "Reload" button or hold down the "Shift-key" and
  77.             press the "Reload" button to force the reload from the
  78.             server.  Usually this will cause the page to display
  79.             properly.

  81.           +o The "Guide" menu and several other buttons are
  82.             initialized to access the most current version of these
  83.             documents from Netscape Communications Corporation's
  84.             World Wide Web site.  If you can not access these
  85.             sites, make sure that you are not sitting behind a
  86.             firewall.  Contact your systems administrator for more
  87.             information on firewalls and how to configure the
  88.             browser to get thru the firewall.  If your machine is
  89.             directly connected to the Internet, then this will not
  90.             be a problem for you.

  92.           +o If your system is configured for a Japanese environment
  93.             the Xt text entry widget may not function properly.
  94.             Try adding the following to your .Xdefaults or
  95.             Xresources file to work around this problem:

  99.           +o If when navigating the web you download an image or
  100.             movie and it brings up a save dialog, make sure that
  101.             your system preferences for the location of the mailcap
  102.             and mime.types files are the correct ones.  Very old
  103.             Netscape Navigator beta images available on the network
  104.             saved preferences for the location of the mailcap and
  105.             mime.types files as "/usr/local/lib/mosaic".  This is
  106.             the incorrect location and will cause several players
  107.             not to run properly.  User's must verify that the
  108.             system defaults for the mailcap and mime.types files
  109.             are pointing to "/var/netscape/communicator".  Making
  110.             this change will most likely cause the player to
  111.             function properly.

  113.           +o If when viewing images using the external imgview
  114.             viewer you get an error dialog saying it can't open a
  115.             file "-nofork" then you have an older version of the
  116.             ImageTools.  You will need to up upgrade to IL version
  117.             3.1 or later.  This product is available on SGI's
  118.             software download site on the web.

  120.           +o Navigator Lite still requires that the Java JIT DSO be
  121.             installed in /usr/local.  It is the last remaining file
  122.             that gets installed in that location.

  140.           +o There are some cases of DNS lookup when the separate
  141.             dns_helper application isn't used.  In these cases a
  142.             failed DNS lookup will hang the rest of the application
  143.             waiting for a timeout from the lookup.

  145.           +o Navigator Lite is not designed to run multiple
  146.             instances of the browser for a single user due to lock
  147.             contention with the bookmarks file, cache, and several
  148.             other databases.  It's best to run a single instance
  149.             then pop up new browsers from within that instance
  150.             using CTRL-N.
  151.  
  152.           +o When mouse dragging over the pulldown bookmarks menu,
  153.             the line separators will sometimes vanish and repaint
  154.             themselves.
  155.  
  156.           +o If the user's identity doesn't match the user's
  157.             personal address book card, then the settings on the
  158.             address book card aren't remembered.
  159.  
  160.           +o When saving the bookmarks from the bookmark menu
  161.             sometimes the UID and GID for the created file are
  162.             bogus id's.
  163.  
  164.           +o If your ~/.netscape/preferences.js file becomes
  165.             corrupted then Navigator Lite may crash on startup.
  166.             Look at that file and verify that all directives are on
  167.             a single line with no newlines in any ()'s.
  168.  
  169.           +o Some Netscape plugins may cause corruption of the
  170.             $HOME/.netscape/plugin-list.  Look at the URL
  171.             about:plugins to see which plugin might have corrupted
  172.             the plugin list.  To workaround the problem, try
  173.             removing the plugin and the $HOME/.netscape/plugin-
  174.             list, start up Netscape and verify that the plugin-list
  175.             file isn't corrupted, then reload the plugin and
  176.             restart Netscape.

  178.           +o If the user's home directory is NFS mounted from
  179.             another machine and the user logs out, the client
  180.             process may not get killed and may need to be killed by
  181.             hand.

  209.             javascript-enabled scrolling of Chinese and Korean
  210.             characters.  On web sites with such scrolling Chinese
  211.             or Korean text, Netscape will generate continuous error
  212.             messages blocking the normal use of the browser.

  214.           +o Korean and Chinese characters on Microsoft FrontPage-
  215.             generated html pages do not always show up properly in
  216.             Netscape Navigator browser.
